Moving away from reliance on performance data, they introduced SHL’s science-based assessments to accurately measure leadership qualities in a fair and consistent way. Assessing over 1,000 managers to identify those who could succeed in a senior position, it revealed that line managers were not always the best judges of high potential—only 44 percent of Valmet employees previously nominated by line managers for HIPO development were likely to rise to and succeed as leaders.
